You've read my Official Farewell, but if I were to truly do justice in thanking all those responsible for making this a good experience, there would be PAGES, and the poor people in the audience listening would probably need another intermission! Still, I need to make sure I thank those people so incredible for making things incredible for me that I could not thank individually on paper.

Eric, you're my exception and I am thanking you one more time because I know there's not enough "thanks" in the world for all you have done, and especially did, this past year for me in this. No man is more patient than you. I love you.

Julie, no sentence, paragraph, book....I think you get the idea...can even scratch the surface for the gratefulness I have for you. My friend, my chosen sister, the one who inspired me to keep going and believe in myself, and the person who "exudes grace and beauty and a commanding presence when she enters a room that draws you in"...remember that article?...still to this day, that is YOU!

Dee, I'm not sure where I would be without you. Your listening ear, your kind heart, and your continuous generosity to me and to so many is such a touching example of what it means to be a real queen. Your spunkiness and "fire" are the roots that inspire armadillos...and those that need to be! ;) Thank you for "keeping on".

Kaili, you are an inspiration and strength that I look up to and adore. Thank you for your friendship and the amazing person you are. I am truly in awe of your courage and yes, again, your strength.

Maria, your gentleness and sweetness are matched by few as well as your beauty inside and out. You are such a darling to me and I thank you for the friend I have in you.

Michelle, I've always thought you had such a queenly character, and crown or not, you are an inspiration as you choose to care for and serve others like a titleholder would because it is the right thing to do. Thank you for all your support, the beautiful jewelry you supplied at nationals, and for being such a good friend.

Megan, a forever cheerleader, dear friend, and the first to ever congratulate me in this journey, and the one still waving her hands in the air and screaming for me. I am forever grateful God brought you into my life.

Rena, my American Queen sister, I am indebted to the hours of phone calls, encouragement and wardrobe help. You were so good to be with me in NY, and for the many years of friendship we share, I am SO, SO glad for. You my dear, are still my Miss USA! ;)

Loni, I am SO thankful that we were able to reconnect after so many years through this. You were such a great part of this year, and I am so thrilled for the future! You are bright, beautiful, talented, strong, driven, and I admire you.

Erika, Mrs. America was MADE PERFECT with you as my roomie. You were and are so terrific. Beautiful, supportive, and a force to be reckoned with. God bless you for all the kindness you've shown to me.

Jeana, I think we are going on 23-plus years of friendship, and still you are the encouragement and support in every aspect of my life. To see you become the person you are is better than anything I can say. Thank you, my prayer warrior!

Jason P., I don't think I CAN thank you enough. You have been more of a friend, support system, one-man-entourage, and saving grace, and I want you to know that all you've done this past year means the world to me.

Alma, for your YEARS of sewing and creating works of art out of things I've brought to you with visions I could not manifest. You are a seamstress beyond and I so appreciate your patience and willingness over the years to do all you've done for me. Thank you.

To my dear sweet friends made this year through Elena's school-Renee', Julie, Mary, Michelle, and Maria - you ladies have kept me grounded, sane and supported all at once. I think we boosted Einstein's profits by leaps and bounds! I love you girls!

Diane, I can not thank you enough for all you've done for me. I think the world of you. You are so beautiful, inside and out, and I cherish you!

Eric knocked the crown off my head as he hugged and kissed me when we met onstage. We are still laughing about that to this day!

I've said it before and I will say it again - the best title, the most important title, and the only one that matters the most to me is Mrs. Anji MEIDEL. I was chosen by Eric to love and cherish forever, and just as he does me, I do the same in return. I love you, Tender. You are my best friend.

Farewell Speech

Being Mrs. Illinois America has been an experience I never thought possible, one I never imagined being the journey it was when it became a reality, and one I will never, ever forget. Romans 8:28 says, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose." God has given me purpose in life, and gave me great purpose during my time as Mrs. Illinois, with opportunities to serve and participate where I never would have had the chance had it not been for this title. From packing meals to send to Haiti, raising more awareness and support for breast cancer through several outlets, to leading a crowd of almost 700 people as a dancing zombie and breaking a new world record...these are just a few of the incredible moments in the life I have known as Mrs. Illinois. Standing on the stage of Mrs. America was a dream fulfilled for me, and a time I will remember fondly (blisters and all)! And through every moment, God has been there completely in control, allowing all things for growth in me and greatness for Him. So I open with my thanks to Him for everything.

My deepest gratitude goes to Eric for being my husband (thank you for choosing me!) and my best friend; thank you for making this possible for me. To my chosen sister Julie, for the constant that is you. To the Mrs. Illinois' who have gone before me, giving me strength, encouragement and examples befitting of royalty both inside and out, I stand and applaud you. To my friends and family, I am indebted to you for your continued support and prayers. To the many people who aided me in preparation before and throughout my reign as Mrs. Illinois; thank you for believing in me and guiding me to and through this adventure. To my Mrs. America sisters, my heart's gratitude for the friends I have in you. Success is never achieved alone, and it is because of all of you that I have been here. You have "raise(d) me up, to more than I can be."

The Mrs. Illinois America Organization affords married women the opportunity of a lifetime. What you do with it - the possibilities are endless. I thank the Aceto family for that. To the sponsors who have continued to support the pageant over the years, I thank you for giving so generously and making Mrs. Illinois feel incredibly special.

To the next Mrs. Illinois and to all the ladies competing for the title; the most important title you will ever hold is that of wife which is why being a "Mrs. Titleholder" is truly special. You share this with your partner in life; he is so important and without your husband, you could not be here today. Cherish him! To every woman...you are uniquely made to do and be uniquely beautiful things. You are a treasure and a gift to this world, and someone, somewhere needs you and the talents you possess. Don't ever forget how priceless you are! No one can compare to you, so don't ever compare yourself to anyone else.

Onto to 2010 and a New Beginning

July 24th marked the final day of my reign as Mrs. Illinois America 2009. The 29th annual Mrs. Illinois America Pageant and the Miss Illinois Teen All America Pageant was held at the Bolingbrook Performing Arts Theater, located in the local high school. We were fortunate to have the space for one of three of Joe's personally constructed stages, originally created for Hemmen's so many years ago. It fit beautifully, and remains a staple of the production.

We were also fortunate to make it in one piece with the torrential downpours and dangerous weather the evening before and morning of the pageant! Despite dodging closed streets, we all managed to begin a full day with 8 lovely and accomplished Mrs. and Teens, and a brand new Junior Miss Illinois, Miss Taylor, whom I spent much of the day with and even had the pleasure of doing hair and make up for her throughout the event. She is a darling, as was every one of our ladies.

The distinguished, and ever-on-top-of-things, Mrs. Tracey Tarantino, was there to put the production together despite her own house flooding! She is one of the best parts of Mrs. Illinois, both during the pageant as well as working with her during the year of being Mrs. Illinois.

By the end of the night, we had a new Teen and a new Mrs. to represent Illinois in the national pageants to come. Strength and courage, ladies...my thoughts and prayers are with you as you prepare in such short time. Make the most of this time, and make it yours.

Special thanks to Michele, Dawn and Misty for making such a big trip up, to all the ladies who sparkle from the inside out...you shine ever bright, and brighter still, and I am so proud of you...thank you to everyone for the calls, well-wishes and prayers! Thank you, Eric, for the beautiful roses, and catching the crown when it fell off my head hugging you during our farewell walk... Priceless!!! ;)

Little Miss, Miss Teen, and Miss Gurnee Pageant

This weekend was spent working with the Little Miss, Miss Teen, and Miss Gurnee Pageant. I was on hand Friday, timing for interview, and then took care of ticket and program sales Saturday. All of the volunteers were tagged with "pageant staff" plates for all the contestants so they knew who to go to when needing help or assistance, and that was a lot of fun to get to be a part of...although, that also made me look like an authoritarian on everything, which I most certainly was not! It sure brought on a lot of laughs too, to some of the questions people asked (Ask the director, please...I'm just here to help!!! HAHAHA!) !!! ;)

This is an impressive group, and in it's third year, continues to grow by leaps and bounds. We had over 300 hundred in attendance this year! It is a very nice production and everyone has been warm, friendly, and a joy to work with. Kaili, the director, is lovely, thoughtful, and a treat to have met this weekend. I thank both she and Jenni, Miss Gurnee 2009, for asking me to help out with the event.

This is my final appearance as Mrs. Illinois America 2009 before passing on the title July 24th. I'll, of course, finish out the blog with the 2010 pageant and closing. It's been quite an experience and I am looking forward to the future!

Today we celebrate our freedom, we celebrate our country and all it provides for us. We are fortunate to be American. We are blessed!

I spent 4th of July morning with the wonderful people of Vernon Hills, getting to participate in their parade - one of the largest in the state. The organizers were exceptionally helpful and friendly, and everyone on the parade route was welcoming with applause and congratulations for all of the entrants. It was a terrific event I can't wait to be on the "sidelines" for next year!

My thanks to Lisa of the Vernon Hills Parade/ 4th of July Celebration Organization for coordinating this event for me, to Jeff and Renee' Wilkin who were there to provide a very festive and stylish ride for the event. And to Eric and Elena as well who got to be a part of the event, too. That was probably the best part for me - getting to share that with them! Elena sang songs and yelled happy Indepedence day...and then "Happy Cuddle Day" (because "Mommy, everyone likes a cuddle and that will make them smile since our candy ran out!"). It was also very special to get to see in the crowd, Mrs. IL 1996, Paige, who shouted hello from the crowd ( I missed most of what she said because of a lot of noise - but I didn't miss her beauty. That lady looks gorgeous no matter what!).

3rd Annual "A Walk in the Park"

Saturday morning was spent with Six Flags Great America for the 3rd Annual "A Walk in the Park" to Cure Kids Cancer event. This event raises funds for pediatric cancers, benefiting Children's Memorial Hospital right here in Illinois. Walkers were treated to VIP time with characters from the park, music, goodie-bags and breakfast along with free day passes for reaching support goals!

This was my second walk with Great America, and it was great to get some returnees as well as meet some new ones! One I would like to highlight is Miss Rosie, a 5year old I got to meet today (as well as her very sweet family), and actually helped them pass out fliers for Rosie's cause, raising money in the fight against brain tumors. Rosie has neurofibromitosis, an inoperable brain tumor, and a lot of other things that have caused her to be on chemotherapy since age 3! But she is a spitfire, and determined not only to not let cancer beat her but help others in the process. She worked the walking crowd passing out her fliers as well to raise even more money at this event. Such a trooper!

Kilwin's Gives to NORD

Sunday was special for many reasons...Father's day, of course! Celebrating my hubby and dads! Kilwin's in Orland Park was celebrating "Dad" as well with complimentary ice cream cones for fathers when another was purchased for NORD, the National Organization for Rare Diseases. And topping it all off, sprinkles and all, was a delightful afternoon spent with newly crowned Mrs. Michigan America, Stephanie Hunt!

We visited with patrons and scooped ice cream - and boy there are some strict rules on how to scoop and serve!!! Our husband's and kids enjoyed an afternoon of sweet treats and we got to enjoy each other's company. I also got to meet several of Stephanie's sorority sisters who are faithful fans of her and her accomplishments. :)

Kilwin's owner, Jackie Jackson is a friend and former college roommate of Stephanie's, and graciously gave toward a good cause that is near and dear to Steph's heart...her son, Donnie, suffers from Rubenstein-Taybi Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. Seeing Stephanie with her son and hearing about some of their life experiences is witnessing the embodiment of love, courage and endurance! You can never compare one woman to another because we are all unique with great things to offer, and I wouldn't take away from any mother's work in this world. Because what she deals with is very tangible and very visible to so many, she has an amazing strength that let's others know "This is motherhood. It's not easy, but it can and will be done...WELL." I am truly grateful for the time I had with her this afternoon, and am honored that they would ask me to be a part of this terrific event.

Golf For the Cure

Friday evening was spent participating in the Susan G Komen Golf for a Cure and Promise Awards Dinner in Highland Park. Golfers played charity games during the day, then they along with volunteers and patrons were treated to refreshments, hors D'oeuvres, and dinner, along with entertainment and silent and live auctions all benefiting breast cancer.

My travel companion for the evening was my friend (and cancer survivor herself) Renee', and we also had the privilege of getting to sit with Pat Rowland, board president of the Susan G Komen Chicagoland affiliate. It was also a great time spent visiting Kathi again, and getting to see Cara one more time - beautifully pregnant, no less! - before she relocates to the Boston Area. These ladies work so diligently for SGK!

My thanks to Renee' for being with me that night (the joke of the evening was that we were dressed in the event's official colors - pink and green!), as well as to the many supporters of this event. Every little bit helps in finding cures and funding screenings for early detection, ultimately saving more lives!

This weekend brought a close to the reign of three amazing ladies and ushered in a new group of bright, beautiful prospectives for Mrs. America in downtown St. Paul, MN at the elegant Fitzgerald Theater. I enjoyed a weekend of catching up and competition watching with dear sister queens, Loni, Heather, Coral, and a surprise of Julie, Mrs. NC, who was one of the judges for the pageant, as well as meeting and re-acquainting with many, many other pageant veterans.

There was a wonderful reunion with another Danville-ite, Jessica Normile, who was also an IL MAO local vet "back in the day" with me, and part of the pageant entertainment for the evening, so Loni, she and I were kind of in our own little world at times, reminiscing about home...I wish we all didn't live so far away from each other. I laughed so hard all weekend long!

I was picked up from the airport by Loni's husband, Tim, and we arrived at the hotel to meet up with Loni, Coral, Holly Ernst (a former Mrs. MN and one of my pageant coaches), and many other formers, staff, and of course Pageant Directors, Mr. and Mrs. Schway. Loni and Tim then set us up for an evening at WA Frost's, which on the inside looks like Cynthia's down in Paducah - so I had a moment thinking about trips down there with Julie! - and the outside looks like you're in another country - SO beautiful! Heather (MN) and her husband joined us along with Jessi and her husband Doug, as well as Laura Diers (IA '08), who had me in stitches - loved meeting her!

Saturday was laid back with a visit to the Mall of America - more memories preparing for this journey of Mrs. IL - and then off to get ready for the pageant itself. What a production!!! The MN Viking Cheerleaders, live band, music stylings by Jessi, an unbelievable dance performance by the "Larkin Dad's" of the Larkin Dance Studio (they performed their own rendition of "Thriller", so immediately I was tickled pink, but these guys could move! One kept doing center split-leaps!!!), and a very entertaining shtick between Carl and Faith Schway every so often were just some of the highlights. By the end, new ladies were crowned and we were off to celebrate at a lovely buffet.

Sunday was a good morning of last minute good-byes at breakfast, and Tim and Loni taking me back to the airport. This has been one of the best weekends of my reign as Mrs. Illinois and I will never forget it.

Special thanks to Loni - there are not enough words to express my gratitude for the friendship regained through this experience with you - thank you for taking such good care of me this weekend. To you and Tim both, for driving, dinner, the beautiful gifts, everything, thank you! To Jessi and Doug - so good to get reacquainted again - thank you for driving, lending your beautiful voice, and your generosity to Loni and me. To all of my sister queens; it was so good to see you and I am so very, very proud of you. Thank you for sharing your weekend with me (Heather, thank you for the bag - you are SO thoughtful!). Holly, it was so good to see you again. Thank you for all your kindness and generosity to me (yes, I'm using that word a lot in this installment because that was HUGE from so many people this weekend!) To the Schways and staff of IA, MN, WI and GA; thank you for your generosity as well. Carl and Faith, thank you for including me in so much, providing my ticket, and offering to take me to the airport, and thank you, Robin, for the sweet bag of gifts. Happy Mother's Day! Walk to Empower!

Sunday was spent in Chicago for the 19th Annual Network of Strength Walk to Empower Breast Cancer Support Today event. Since the event has grown so much it had to be moved at the last minute to Grant Park, Butler Field! The announcement at this morning's warm up was that 35,000 participants came out for this Mother's Day! How cool is that?!

Speaking of cool...um, COLD...FREEZING COLD (good morning, 38 degrees!)...there was some major layering going on to keep from freezing this morning. It may be the month of May, but it was NO May Day when it came to weather at 4:45am! Two short sleeved shirts, one long, one fleece jacket, one volunteer shirt and a fluffy sweater duster later, and I was good to go. Well, at least for the first half hour! After putting together bibs and pins and registering runners, the feeling came back to my feet and toes, ohhhhh, sometime after returning to our hotel room (hubby thoughtfully took us to Chicago for a nice pre-Mother's Day dinner, and a REALLY EARLY morning driving reprieve for me).

No amount of cold could outweigh how glad I was to be there, though. Not only did I see some faces I'd seen before, but I also got to meet some amazing new ones. The one picture posted with me in it is sitting with Miss Tani, who after 13 years of being breast cancer free, and a volunteer for WTE and SGK for 15 years, found out this past Friday that her cancer has returned. She will be going in for pre-treatment Wednesday. After talking to me about everything, including her meeting Mrs. CO from over 10 years ago at a walk in Milwaukee who was her inspiration being a survivor as well, she said, "Oh well, I'm still here and I am still going to be here fighting, and fighting for others. I will see you in August!!!" She and I have been working with SGK 3 Day (Tani will have 10 years on my 6 as of this upcoming year - she's giving me something to shoot for, and I am praying she will keep me running!), but on different crews. We will now be looking for each other from now on, and I expect her to be smiling and cheering everyone on just like today!

Elgin 2010 Follies, "Game On!"

Friday and Saturday evenings were spent in Elgin as part of the biennial Follies, now in their 28th year, benefiting the Elgin Junior Service Board's many community service projects.

I was invited to be a part of the Follies as one of the Walking Hat Ad Ladies, a tradition celebrated since the 1960's! Sponsors of the event purchase hat ads to be displayed during the meet and greet, raffle and refreshments before the show, and then walk across the stage during the show to promote them once again. These hats are beautifully and creatively made from scratch by hand by the JSB members, and seeing their finished work is impressive! Some even had lights and moving parts!

I also had the opportunity to sit in on one of the MANY practices in preparation for the actual event, and they work so hard in putting together a terrific show. They actually had audience members come back to see it again the second night because it was so entertaining! Creative, energetic and hardworking are all of these folks that work together for a great cause!

(Note: My hat was THE National Bank of Elgin...I was lucky to get a light-weighted hat! And MAN was it sparkly!!!! ;) LOVED IT!)

Tuesday evening was spent at the Lexington House in Hickory Hills, IL for a fashion show and benefit for The Lipinksi-Callahan-Daly Chapter of the Leukemia Research Foundation. This was their 38th annual event supporting Leukemia Research with dinner, raffles and more. Miss Illinois USA and Miss Illinois Teen USA were also on hand to be a part of the event - so pretty and SO tall! And most importantly, so VERY, VERY sweet! Beautiful girls, inside and out!

My thanks to Abby and Tracey Tarantino for coordinating this event for me. Tracey is a dream to work for and with, and I am very thankful for her continued support of the Mrs. Illinois America Organization. Her staff is amazing, kind, and always makes you feel good! Also, special thanks to Nancy for my amazing wardrobe! She works so hard to pick items that are flattering and fabulous for the runway for every single girl, not only for a great show, but also for a great experience. Really, everyone who works with Tracey, from her staff, to her coordinators, to her models; they are all genuinely good people who welcome you as one of theirs and are a joy to be around. Sunday was spent at Barnes & Noble in Oak Brook for a special Fancy Nancy Event. Little girls came dressed up in their fanciest dresses and dress up clothes, listened to stories, got to go to several craft tables - one of which was to make their very own crown! - and enjoy refreshments. They also had a Fashion Parade where they walked about the store waving and picking up prizes along the way.

Events like these are very special because I get to incorporate family in them. Eric and Elena got to come along and "get fancy" as well, and I got to be with them more than I would at a regular event.

What fun to get to play with the kids, and even have fun making some crafts myself for a little late-comer so she could have all the things everyone else got. She really liked the bracelet I made her! I liked the crown she made!

Wish Upon a Wardrobe

Saturday was spent with the Elgin Junior Service Board partnering with the Elgin YWCA for the Second Annual Wish Upon a Wardrobe (which as soon as we completed the day, they began work in preparation to receive and pack 3,ooo dresses coming for their next event as they have now officially become a part of Cinderella's Closet! Congratulations, ladies!).

This event is meant to give a COMPLETE wardrobe for ladies in need to create an amazing prom experience they would not normally have. It is opened a few hours in the morning (unadvertised) for a select few referred by counselors, teachers, etc. that are special circumstance cases and are given first choice for free. There would be no way they could have anything for prom or go if not for this gift from JSB and the YWCA. Then the afternoon is opened for any girl who would like to save money and have a nice wardrobe put together at a nominal fee (just $20! We actually ended up staying until 3 to make sure everyone got the same treatment and the same time to pick exactly what they wanted). All are treated to refreshments and assigned a personal shopper to help her find dresses, shoes, and accessories, carry everything for her, help her try things on and basically pamper her for the day. We strived to make them feel like Cinderella!

To Dee, Deb and others of the JSB for starting this program for Elgin just 2 years ago, and continuing to grow it and make it even better. To Julia, CEO of the Elgin YWCA, thank you for for your hard work in this and all of the outreach programs you provide through the YWCA. Brides Against Breast Cancer

Presented by the Making Memories Foundation, this national outreach program is designed to (with the help of generous donations of actual gowns as well as monetary gifts) provide a day where wishes are granted in getting to shop for dream dresses at unbelievable prices and a weekend spent celebrating with family and friends. This helps, if even for a moment, set aside the thoughts of cancer giving ladies good memories to cherish. There are more than 32 yearly shows, and this year's Chicago event is being held this weekend Friday April 2nd and Saturday April 3rd.

The Mission Statement of Making Memories:

"To provide an opportunity for metastatic breast cancer patients' dream or wish to be fulfilled by providing a special time of 'Making Memories' together with their families, a chance that might not have become a reality without the assistance of the Making Memories Breast Cancer Foundation."

2010 Miss Tuscola Pageant

Saturday was spent in Tuscola, Illinois as part of the panel of judges for the 49th annual Miss, Junior, and Little Miss Tuscola Pageant.

This quaint little town has a lot of love for and pride in their pageant and all their contestants. You felt the excitement as soon as the pageant started with a packed audience all cheering for their favorites. The directors were brand new this year, and seeing how everything went together so well and so smoothly, you'd never know! And the setting literally transformed from a high school gym, to a beautiful ocean, fun-in-the-sun theme that made you forget the rain outside. I am incredibly impressed with this group, and am sure they will have much success in the years to come.

I was also excited to get to see long-time, beautiful friend Amy Wright again, as well as meet the lovely Terri Karch in person, after getting to know one another via Facebook. Gotta love the Internet these days! :) Both ladies have been involved in pageantry for a very, very long time, and lent their expertise in the field to make up the remaining of our judges for the event. Amy is currently the owner of Already Approved by Amy, a new Pageant and Prom Boutique located in Covington, IN, and also my provider of the evening ensemble for the event. Mister Rogers Neighborhood

Remember Mr. Rogers? "It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood, a beautiful day for a neighbor...would you be mine, could you be mine..."

Saturday, March 20th, is Mr. Roger's birthday, and had he been alive today he would have celebrated his 82nd birthday. I remember having a phone conversation with my dear friend, Jeana, and the two of us literally crying that Mr. Rogers was gone the day we found out he had passed away...her daughters way too young to remember much, and mine...well, mine will never see it unless I buy videos. I am seriously considering it...

I guess I am now opening up on giving out how old I really am, considering I grew up on Mr. Rogers, so yes, I am "old" according to some. But I won't forget Mr. Rogers and his sweaters, his changing of shoes - flipping them in the air as he did to come and go - and his constant attitude of accepting others, loving others, and being kind to others.

So I share what has been going on in Pittsburgh for some time, and is slowly reaching others...and hopefully the nation...in what has grown from "Sweater Day" in remembrance of him, to a national day of volunteerism. It began in partnership with the United Way of Allegheny County where the show "Mr. Rogers" was made, but as they say in Allegheny, "You have to start small. Fred would want that to happen. He wanted to help others."

Even the smallest things, like returning a shopping cart to the store, to opening a door for someone, to working with any facility in need...it is an effort in love and in giving. It only takes a little bit, but a little bit goes a long way.

You don't need a title to do for others. It does open doors, it does aid in a lot. But it does not ever make you the only person who can help and it never defines you. So crown or not...crown others in love and service. Will I be posting what I do for others tomorrow? No. Actually, I am choosing not to for the sake of this not being about me, or about being Mrs. Illinois, but rather that I draw attention to the needs of others out there, how much there is, and what we can all do.

Matthew 6:2 "So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth they have received their reward in full"

There is nothing wrong with letting others know what you do for the sake of furthering a cause or getting others involved. Sometimes, though, it is good to remain silent about what we do, to show another side of ourselves and of service, focusing on the need rather than us and our works.

Please think about it being a beautiful day in your neighborhood and what you can do to make it so. Whatever it is...God bless!

Saturday night was a huge success for Susan G Komen thanks to the hard work of the folks at Arthur Murray Chicago, celebrity dancers, and patrons of the event held at the Hyatt Regency Chicago's Crystal Ball Room.

This was the 5th anniversary for Dancing with Chicago Celebrities, and by far their most successful. During the live auction, over $8,000 alone was raised for just one of the prize packages offered by Chicago's own Chef Rick Bayless, a former celebrity dancer himself, winning in the inaugural year as well as continuing to serve and entertain.

Valerie Warner of WGN was our celebrity dance winner of the evening this year and completely deserving...although she had a lot of "close seconds"! ;) DC Crenshaw was our celebrity winner for raising the most funds for SGK as part of their competition. I applaud each and every one of them for doing an amazing job both on and off the dance floor.

It was great getting to see and visit with Kathi, visit with Ruth - congratulations, my dear! - and also congratulate "little sister" Miss Illinois America on a job well done. She is an exquisite dancer!

I was very fortunate to be accompanied by the lovely Kaili Harding, former Mrs. Illinois. She is always a joy to be with and a huge support. Thank you, Kaili, for giving of your time (and doesn't she look as lovely as ever, if not more so?!)!

This was an opportunity of a lifetime for me to witness and be apart of. I close sharing some great, inspiring words from NBC's Ginger Zee, former celebrity dancer and breast cancer survivor, "You don't choose cancer. It chooses you. But you can choose to fight, have a great attitude, and do all you can to live." I can not stress enough to live today like it were to be your last. No one is ever guaranteed tomorrow. No one is ever guaranteed health, wealth or happiness. All we get is right now. What we do with it is up to us.

Share Our Strength Benefit Fashion Show

Saturday, March 6th, was spent at the Ashton Place in Willowbrook, Illinois as part of the fashion show in conjunction with the luncheon, raffle and silent auction for Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital of Downer's Grove benefitting Share Babies.

Share is AGSH's perinatal support program for families coping with high-risk pregnancies, premature births, sick infants or the loss of a child due to miscarriage, stillbirth, or neonatal death.

A really touching part of the fashion show is the children's portion because all of our "models" are either children cared for and saved by this program, or siblings of "angels gone home". My favorite part of being there was getting to talk to a lot of these little ones, take pictures and get hugs from these little miracles.

Special thanks to Tracey and Abby of Zzazz Productions for coordinating the fashion show and having Mrs. Illinois be a part of events like these. To her staff for making everything run so smoothly (and this one especially, since we had to run up and down stairs for each change of wardrobe!). Dancing with Celebrities Kick-Off Party Success!

Tuesday evening was spent at Rockit Bar & Grill as the setting for the official Kick-off Party for Dancing with Celebrities before the main event March 12th. Patrons and guests were treating to "Pink Drinks" and dining discounts for donations, and we had an awesome raffle ticket sales all benefiting Susan G. Komen.

I got the opportunity to "work the room" with Matt Rodewald of NBC 5 and his dance partner Amy for ticket sales, and was really excited about that since Matt and I worked together once before at Six Flags for the V Factory performance and music competition event. I met Amy at our last committee meeting at Arthur Murray as she was one of the first people to sit down and greet me...she was also ready to sell me on dance lessons! She has an awesome personality, so I may have to say that I have a bit of a bias toward their win...but really, guys, I love you all for your dedication so everyone is a winner to me! :)

Also on hand to introduce the event: Mr. D.C. Crenshaw, host of Game Time Dine, Mai Martinez of CBS 2, and DWCC alum Ginger Zee of NBC. I am so impressed with these people, not only for their gift of time and hard work raising funds for breast cancer, but that they are so genuinely personable, relatable, and REAL! They made everyone feel special, they were thankful to everyone for their attendance and support, and never acted like the celebrities they are, for this event or in real life. I applaud each one of them for their character.

We had a terrific turnout and had fabulous raffle prizes won...but there's still more to be won!!! There are even more, even bigger prizes at the actual event to be held March 12th! Just $10.00 a ticket, or $50.00 for 6, puts entries in the running for some great things, and all proceeds go to Susan G. Komen! You do not have to be present to win!!!

Enchanted Evening

Friday night was spent being a part of the Enchanted Evening Party sponsored by the Gurnee Park District. Children are treated to coloring pages, crowns, and wands along with photos and "meet and greet" with their favorite fairy tale characters. Dinner and dancing is also a part of the festivities.

Most of the attendees are Father/Daughter dates, and I have to say it was so sweet seeing the many daughters that sported corsages and bouquets of flowers from their daddy's, along with others who matched each other, and even a few that came in full costume! One family actually had dad as king with his princess, and another family where the kids were dressed as knight, princess, and dragon...too cute!

I'm sure you can figure out who I was...it was so much fun getting to dance with all the kids and spend time talking and playing with them. There were quite a few that were concerned that Prince Charming wasn't with me all night long...I had to explain that he was every one's prince that night. And he really was. What a good sport, making sure he posed for pictures and danced with all the little princesses...but we did make a point to dance a little to show that "fairy tales really do come true". And fortunately (and unfortunately), I wore the dreaded 5" clear pageant heels with crystals, because I had many little girls ask to see my glass slippers...and they do look like them! Some even asked when I would lose one of them...how tempting that was halfway through the night!!! ;)

One little girl asked about my sash, because she said she thought I was Cinderella, but only queens wear sashes...so when I told her I was a "queen", she was all too excited to tell her mommy that I was the real Cinderella because in the story she marries the prince and someday becomes the good queen and so she was seeing the story really come true. So darling what these little ones think of and retain!

Sharing the Love, Globally

It's Valentine's weekend, and it's good to show love and share it.

Saturday was spent working with Kids Around the World to put together 15,000 packaged meals to send to Haiti. Partnering with Kids Against Hunger, they have been able to provide play equipment and meals since 1994 all over the world, but with the recent events in Haiti, efforts have been stepped up to send more.

Facts:

One food packet contains a scoop of rice, a scoop of soy protein, 6 dehydrated vegetables and chicken flavoring, and a scoop of minerals for meeting both essential nutrient needs as well as combating the effects of starvation. One food packet holds the equivalent of 6 servings...If everyone took a moment to look at that small bag, there would be a real wake-up call as to how truly rich and blessed we are here in America. This was an amazing and sobering experience for me to be a part of and I can't wait to work with them again.

Snowflake Serenade

The Gurnee Park District Preschool holds its annual Winter Music Program, Snowflake Serenade, at this time of year, and I was asked to be a part of the event.

My Saturday afternoon was spent setting up refreshments, passing out programs, and greeting families for the two music programs. I actually missed out on the first of the two concerts as far as getting to see the performance itself. One of the children has a fear of "characters" (people dressed up, figures you see at restaurants and amusement parks, etc) and when he saw the crown and sash he thought I was a character at the event and was afraid to sing. I had to hide out in the kitchen until he was done...so cute and so sad all at the same time...I felt so bad for him, but he got through his singing without a hitch, and I was able to come back and be a part of everything again. It was so much fun watching the children sing and perform their parts (I think my favorite was the "Popcorn Song"). And meeting with several of the families afterward is always a treat! I love my community and am grateful for each opportunity to serve. My thanks to them for their warmth and support.

Friday Evening was spent with the Gurnee Parks District for a night of entertainment and fun. The 2nd annual Frosty Fest was a terrific time spent watching ice sculptures be created, kids got to make their own, and beautiful ones to be admired. Horse drawn sleighs, dog sledding, ice sculpture painting, crafts, a snowman contest, and marshmallow roasting outside were just some of the fun activities. Indoors, patrons and guests enjoyed live music, snacks, coffee and hot cocoa. And what would Frosty Fest be without Frosty the Snowman? The children got to meet and take pictures with the Famous Frosty himself!

I manned the snack table, got to visit with many of our guests, and even got to have some quality time with Eric and Elena. Once Elena realized what I was doing, she wanted to help too...she helped herself to behind-the-counter-duty, showing kids and parents alike where the snacks were, handing them out and even making recommendations...very funny! I think she may have welcomed more people than I did! She's a natural host, that one!

The "Almost" Slumber Party

Friday night was the annual "Almost" Slumber Party for children ages 4-8 through the Gurnee Park District. This was a terrific event where volunteers get to help kids with crafts, face painting, rooms to play different games and take a bag full of goodies home, as well as enjoy an Ice Cream Sunday bar and movie. I also got to be the "lady behind the lens", capturing all of the event fun on film for the Park District.

Special thanks to Linda Brogren for coordinating the event appearance for me, Christie of Gurnee Parks and her sister Jamie for doing an awesome job facilitating the event. This was a lot of fun and I can't wait for our next event working together!

PS: Elena and Eric got to come enjoy the event which was also fun getting to see them and share that together...but it had been a long day for Elena with a lot of play with preschool and then at the gym with NO nap at all, so she didn't quite make it through everything! ;)

Breakfast with Santa

Saturday was spent at Viking Park in Gurnee, IL for the annual breakfast with Santa. I was on hand with Miss Gurnee and Junior Miss Gurnee along with Park District Volunteers to serve breakfast. We had two seatings with 160 people in each! I've never served so many pancakes in my life!!!

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is long gone, but that doesn’t stop the staff at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, Ore. From administrators to nurses, cleaning crews to surgeons, everyone threw on a pair of pink gloves and got down in the spirit of raising awareness for breast cancer.

More Bollywood than ER, the video is an infectious, upbeat dance to Jay Sean’s “Down.” Kudos to the elderly man with a broom for the best solo performance. It’s a tie between the lab technicians and the surgical staff for best small-group choreographed dance.

“Our employees put together this video to generate breast cancer awareness throughout our hospital system,” according to the video’s YouTube page. “We had a ton of fun putting this together and hope it inspires others to join in the cause.”

The video shows that there’s more than one way to fight cancer. Although the clip lacks professional dance moves, it sure makes up for it in charisma, style and hope.

Traveling the State to our Capitol

Friday was spent as a special guest greeter for the historic Dana-Thomas House in Springfield, Illinois. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright beginning in 1902, it remains a "must see" piece of the rich historical landmarks that reside in our state Capitol.

I began my evening greeting guests at the front door, then was treated to being a part of the greeting "staff" in the room that was used for parties, balls, and entertaining vocal stylings of the husband of Susan Lawrence Dana, whom the house was designed for originally. Santa and I were a big hit! ;) Isn't his coat amazing? He even had each reindeer named on the buttons of his outfit!

Afterward, it was suggested I try a hometown favorite for dinner so I went to family owned Saputo's. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT!!!

Friday, November 20th was spent at the Danville VA Hospital/Health Care Facility. I had the pleasure - honor, really - visiting with Mr. Michael Hamilton, Director of the Illiana Health Care System, and then visiting four different wards. I've visited before over the years, and each time it's humbling to me. These people literally gave their lives to serve our country and keep us safe. What great love and compassion that is.

My Mom has told me about how my grandpas would talk about the USO Girls (they were both Army) and how much it meant to them having those ladies come to visit or sing. Visitors of any kind are really pretty important to our veterans, but for some reason "Beauty Queens" are a real treat and I was happy to be a special visitor for the day. I think I was pretty spoiled actually to get hand shakes, hugs, and even a few kisses from these wonderful people. One gentleman looked just like my Grandpa Zajicek (and he spoke like my Great Grandma Zajicek, which was wild) and I could have sat with him for hours.

Special thanks to Mr. Doug Shouse for arranging my visit as well as taking me around the facility and taking pictures. To Mr. Hamilton for taking the time to meet with me as well, for my very special pen, and for sharing information about the new buildings in progress to give even more freedoms and comfort to our veterans staying with them. And I even got to reconnect with a former high school friend who now works for the hospital in patient care and she walked us around introducing patients, so thank you very much, Suzanne!

The Night of Lights Holiday Parade

My home town growing up is Danville, Illinois, and I had the privilege of being a part of the Night of Lights Parade in Danville this Thursday evening. The rain held up for a really nice event! It was good to come home and be a part of the a week long holiday opening!

As it turns out I also got to see all the fanfare for the Danville Vikings, my High School football team, as they are 12 and 0, and were playing in the semi-finals Saturday! Go Vikings!!!

It's like being in the most fancy Bed and Breakfast ever! My "room" - I should call SUITE - I stayed in with her is beyond beautiful, and she treated me like a true queen!) I am indebted to the goodness of many of my Mrs Illinois "sisters" as they continuously give and provide...God Bless you!!! I will have photos from the VA visit soon! The photo in front of the Veteran's War Memorial is especially important to me because my grandfathers were Army vets, my Father-in-law is a Marine, and I was there for the actual dedication of this memorial when I was Miss Vermilion County AFL-CIO (Miss America Organization). Getting to be back there again was incredibly sweet!

PS - that dog had a lighted up outfit, and apparently is a part of the parade every year as a "reindeer"...too cute!

Jingle Mingle Parade in Burr Ridge

Saturday evening was spent in Burr Ridge for the 2nd Annual Jingle Mingle, an event filled with train rides, live reindeer, face painting, meeting the Mayor and Santa, and parade leading up to the tree lighting in downtown. We were so fortunate to have some wonderful 60+ degree weather! There were over 1,000 people in attendance this year! I had the opportunity to help with the tree lighting ceremony after the parade, and then visit with those in attendance taking photos and signing autograph cards. It was kind of fun sitting right down on the sidewalk with the children as they acted like they were talking to a "princess". That was a fun 15 minutes of fame there! Walking back to the car afterward, I had a family of 5 all take turns trying on the crown and taking pictures. As much as it is fun to wear the crown...because in truth, it is...it's even more fun to watch others try it on with such enthusiasm. Who knew something as simple as putting on a tiara makes so many feel like a million bucks?! :) Making others feel good is my favorite part of all of this!

This event was especially fun for me since Eric and Elena were also a part of the parade with Eric driving the car - so generously provided by Castle Buick-Pontiac-GMC - and Elena riding along. She didn't want to sit up high with mommy, wanting instead to be next to daddy, waving and hollering "Merry Christmas!". Such a hoot! She also loved waiting for the parade because that meant she got to meet the firemen and see the truck, as well as help herself to the passenger side of the military jeep in the parade. She actually wanted to ride with them instead of us!!! ;) She was enamoured by Bebe the dog, who was with her grandparents, Marcie and Joe Aceto, who also made the trip out, after already coming out for the fashion show earlier in the day to be there for (and a part of!) the parade.

Special thanks to Lisa Scheiner of the parade committee for her hard work in making it a successful year #2 for the parade (from 500 to 1,000 in attendance in one year is huge! Congrats!). -Before I left. Yep, that's toilet paper on the floor by my feet. Diva was in that first thing this morning...it can NEVER be easy getting out the door!!! ;)

-One of the many young ladies I got to take photos with and talk to during the event. I want to praise each and every mom, grandma, aunt and sibling (we had a grandmother at our table who brought her granddaughters to the event!) who brought along young ones like these. This is a great lesson in understanding the preciousness and fragility of life. Our health is a gift, and we can take advantage of that and use it positively by getting involved in events, walks, and service projects to give back. Sharing our "gift" is immeasurable. Just ask Mr. Taylor, Ellen's dad.

We met darling Ellen Taylor, a 5 year old patient of St. Jude's Hospital in Tennessee, who serenaded the audience with "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", and I don't think I saw a dry eye in the house. We then listened to her father speak about their personal story and his gratefulness to St. Jude's Hospital and the supporters. What a truly strong, beautiful family. I enjoyed getting to talk to little Ellen and her friend, Laura...and their "babies", as well as take time visiting with her father. I am speechless...

I also got to be a part of the event by announcing the "Big" Raffle Prizes at the end of the event. All helping fund the hospital and save lives...and there were some pretty amazing things to be won. But as one of the speakers mentioned, even if you don't take home a prize, your purchased raffle ticket is helping a child win his/her battle with cancer. That alone is THE prize.

Special thanks goes to Marcie and Julie Aceto for coordinating the event and getting some of the Mrs. Illinois Family to come along in their support: Carol Gunnell, Karen Cline and her daughter, and Michele Barber were also in attendance and it was so nice to see Carol again and get to know Karen and Michele better. Now, let me start by saying I have a fond love for this because my little (ONE OF) sister, Sally, whom danced to this number in tap class many moons ago...and she IS my sister...but there are some other sisters I am so very fond of! Julie, my "chosen sister", whom I am eternally grateful for...kisses! Some other former Mrs. Illinois' who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to make this an exceptional experience for me and to be my example. I love you so as well! And that of the Mrs. America Class of 2009/2010...They are ALL beautiful sisters.

I got to be with one of my "sisters" this weekend. Christy, Mrs. Kentucky, was in Chicago for a Jazzercise Conference and we made a point to meet up. After spending the evening with Christy and her lovely friends, I so wish we would have had the 2 and 1/2 weeks we normally would at Mrs. America, because I would have loved to have had more time with her ahead of time. She is a darling, real to the core, and a HOOT AND A HALF!!! And her friends with her were beyond what one would expect when it comes to southern hospitality. They brought the loving south to my doorstep, and I took in every ounce! All of these ladies are beautiful inside and out, and I am so ready to move to Lexington just because of them! ;0)

Thrilling the World!!!

There was a reason why we got some serious rain and cold for the BC Walk Saturday Morning, because I needed some help in the "bad hair" department..."Why on earth would you want that?!" you ask? Because Saturday night was the Thrill the World Global Event at Six Flags Great America where we, along with parks, theaters, etc across the world, all perform "Thriller" at the same time in an effort to break the Guinness Book of World Records!

I was asked by Six Flags to teach the choreography and be a part of the event. So Saturday afternoon, scary hair, cobwebs and all, photographer and exceptional friend, Jason Pawlowski, and I were escorted into the deepest parts of Six Flags to be "Zombie-fied". I don't think I have ever seen anything so cool! I got to be made up by the extraordinarily talented team of JPM Productions...WOW!!! That's serious airbrushing, folks!

I also got to kick off the event by sitting with the Grand Marshall of the Fright Fest Parade, Mayor Slayer. Then it was time to get the practice started so we would be ready to Thrill the World by breaking a world record.

We had 676 registered dancers at the official 7:30pm time slot for us, just at Great America. That's pretty huge in itself!

I will have a couple posts for pictures, and of course a final number for the Broken Record!

Fun Fact: This will be my second time listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. The first time was in 1991 when I, along with my swing choir, sang 80 hours and 32 minutes straight to break the world record for longest time singing in a group. Needless to say, this record broken Saturday night was A LOT more fun!!!

We braved wind and bitter rain, but we still had a great turnout, and yet another opportunity to raise money and awareness for breast cancer. Afterward, Kaili treated me to a tour of downtown Wheaton where we met several shop owners and even a community dignitary at lunch!

The town of Wheaton is exceptionally warm, giving and kind. I highly recommend patronizing the shops/establishments there. You will not be disappointed! My favorites were:

Making Strides in Lake County

2009 is the inaugural year for Lake County Making Strides for Breast Cancer with the American Cancer Society. We officially make up 9 affiliates across the state of IL now! I had the honor and privilege to be the emcee for the event as well as walk with our fundraisers. As of this morning, our event raised over 112,000.00...and counting!!!

We had amazing cheerleaders - literally - throughout the walk, a HUGE turnout of survivors, and even a tent for SHOPPING!!! Oh, heaven! I can't wait for next year's event...I get to be back in sweats and no makeup again!!! ;)

Special thanks to Sarah (for yet another flawless script), Kari, Jessica - Debra and Anna "K" who I just met (amazing women with ACS) and am looking forward to working with in the future - Chris, our terrific DJ who continues to give selflessly of his time and equipment to many of the ACS walks/functions, and of course to Jason Pawlowski, for once again being the man of the hour, taking pictures and taking care of me. You are a Godsend.

Sunday was the 32nd annual Chicago Marathon hosted by bank of America. This year over 30,000 runners finished, there was a new men's record broken and a new women's winner.

I spent the day volunteering at the 23rd mile of the race dedicated to Susan G. Komen, where we cheered on all runners, including our very own in the Marathon for SGK, as well as pass out pink pom-poms and clappers.

We saw helicopters overhead, and the TV crews come by focusing in on the lead as the first runners came along...and not just runners...wheel chairs (if you call them that - they looked like super-charged, turbo bikes run solely on the power of a man's - or woman's - arms (AMAZING), runners on prosthesis (AMAZING), and even runners who were blind (and again, AMAZING), were all part of a 29 mile journey...I am in complete awe of these people. ALL of them.

Special thanks to Mr. John Anderson, President, and Mr. David Baker, Vice President for External Affairs, of the Illinois Institute of Technology of Chicago, for not only coming out to the event, but also helping put our mile together and providing pastries and coffee, tea and water to keep the volunteers refreshed. They are very generous to have done so much (so nice to have met you both!).

I received a very special gift today from the wonderful people of Walk for Hope. I am deeply touched by their kindness and generosity to me. It is my privilege and honor to serve and help them.

It is for them, and for those dealing with breast cancer, that I am continuing to be a part of these events. They are the ones to be remembered and acknowledged.

They are the celebrities, they are the stars, and the focus of the efforts made in walks, rallies, and galas. The victims and survivors, and those who work countless hours in an effort to give those with breast cancer MORE TIME, are the ones who deserve recognition and crowns.

Walk for Hope 2009

And the Sun Came Out...!!!!!!!!!

October 4th marked the 15th Annual Walk for Hope for Breast Cancer (my 6th), and this year I was invited to do some really special things including addressing the crowd about my involvement with Walk for Hope, helping in acknowledging our survivors, and cutting the ribbon at the beginning of the race.

Our host for the event this year was the incomparable Jackie Bange of WGN News. And I say that with all sincerity and admiration because she is down to earth, gracious, and "all about everyone else". Not for a moment was she concerned about who she was at this event, rather hugging survivors, talking to the crowd, and taking the time to encourage a young man who just lost his mom to BC last year. I admire her and thank her and WGN for their time and coverage of the event. Be sure to watch WGN at 9pm tonight (yep - I actually made the news! Briefly, but wow, how neat!!!).

This weekend kicked off the beginning of many of the activities that are part of the Southern Illinois Fall Festival in and around Mt. Vernon, Illinois.

I had the opportunity to help with and judge the first annual Miss Southern Illinois Festival Pageant that is directed by Dawn Heacock, one of the lovely ladies (inside AND out) who competed in the Mrs. Illinois America Pageant this year. She did a wonderful job putting together her very first pageant as a director, and I was proud of her for having a natural beauty contest (and they all were really beautiful!), as well as celebrating the USA with a red, white and blue theme. Southern Illinois Fall Festival this year is called Remembering 9/11, dedicated to and remembering all the first responders, in addition to recognizing hometown heroes in law enforcement and emergency services.

I also had the great privilege of visiting the Mt. Vernon Outland Airport and their first annual Midwest LSA Expo. Looking at all the planes both on the ground and in the air was really something (I might have to talk to those guys about flying down next time...that car ride is brutal!!! ;) )

Here's a shot on the first day of practice, at the President's Suite for one of the dignitary gift nights, Habitat Day, and another practice shot...late night in "comfies" and faux crowns...gotta love it.

(I'm trying to remember what it was that was going on in that first practice because we all have some strange faces...I look like I am smelling something funny...it may have been one of the many funny demonstrations of how to walk, look, smile and pause that Frit and Frat would do way too well! And yes, for those that noticed, I am matching Maureen when she came to practice, except her top was black and white).

So congratulations to Andrea Robertson, our new Mrs. America, who I am sure will do great things with her year, and great things at Mrs. World. It is an honor to know you and to have competed with you. To the ladies of the Class of 2009…I have great memories, good stories, and have some incredible examples of class, ingenuity, grace, style, and beauty because of you. I applaud each and every one of you and thank you all for what you have given me in this experience.

This time at Mrs. America would not have meant as much as it did had it not been for some people I’d like to mention. The road to Mrs. America is long and difficult, sometimes it even looks impossible. I went and I feel I did my very best, but I did not go alone, and for that I am grateful.

To my Father in Heaven Who blessed me with the chance to go to Mrs. America and to meet incredible ladies from all over the US that I am truly grateful for, Thank You. I give You praise, and all honor and glory go to You. You are completely sovereign and I am glad.

To my Mrs. Illinois sisters: Julie, for your encouragement every step of the way, all your Tucson memories and information so I knew just what to bring and be ready for, for my beautiful box of cards and gifts to open throughout my stay, and the phone calls checking in on me (even after you had Max on finals night!!!); thank you, my beautiful, chosen sister! Dee, for all your love and support, for the eternal cheering section that is you, for making the trip out to be there in Tucson for me with all the other things going on in your life, for the beautiful jewelry, and all your prayers; thank you for constantly going above and beyond for me and for so many others, my dear friend. Kaili, for the calls, flowers, the ever-so-needed clothing rack, constant encouragement, my awesome t-shirt, and the character you possess; thank you with all my heart for being so kind to me and for becoming a great friend. Michele, thank you for the phone call and beautiful necklace and your support through the years; I am so grateful for you and the contstant goodness you share. Maria, for my beautiful t-shirt and your phone calls and sweet encouragement; thank you, dear mommy-to-be, sweet friend. These women are generous, genuine women that are the epitome of Mrs. Illinois and Mrs. America. Their actions really do speak louder than words, and any words, actions or deeds done by these women solidify their example of commitment to excellence in life.

To the people who made my preparation uncomplicated, fun, and made me fully ready for all aspects of competition: Diane, Holly, Justin, Julie, Dee, Kaili, Frank, Jason, Michelle, Kathy, Dave and Loni. Thank you for your help, support, encouragement, belief in me and solidifying in me what I knew and know in myself already, but because of you became stronger, more certain and able to go forth with confidence.

My thanks to the Mrs. Illinois Organization for providing a chance for ladies in Illinois to get the opportunity to be a part of the Mrs. America experience. My thanks to Joe and Marcie for breakfast the day we left for home and the pretty crown bag, to Julie for the card and crown t-shirt, and to Lisa for the flowers and call on prelims night.

Did I make top 10? No, as I am sure most reading this already know. Do I have any regrets? NO (except that I should have had more desserts)! I prepared and worked hard as I did for state for 4 years (yeah, I've mentioned that before, but these were important years to me that were not wasted and deserve to be noted). I did not compromise my standards or beliefs. I loved my choices. I loved myself. I believed (and still do) that I, among the best of the best of each of our states, would make a great Mrs. America. And we do and are in our own right, continuing to serve in our own states, in our communities and our families.

When people see Mrs. America or Mrs. State in action, I hope they see that it’s not about saving the world; it’s about serving your corner of it. Anyone can do it, but you have to make the choice to do it.

With that I leave you with some things I've been told, firmly believe, and want to pass on...

Never be anything but your best you.

Never doubt your worth.

Never do anything to jeopardize your integrity.

And, Never say Never to your dreams.

Day 8

Finals!

We had a final day of rehearsal before the final night of competition and the end of an amazing, once in a lifetime experience. We got to meet Alan Thicke, and see Florence Henderson again for practice, as well as work with the marching band that would be accompanying us for the opening number. I was half-tempted to grab myself a flag and have myself a good time reminiscing with the band kids, but that's how silly you get on no sleep at the end of things!

Not making the top cut meant we got to sit...ahhhhhhhhhhhhh, heaven! And eat pizza...and Mrs. Congeniality (NJ - how appropriate in my opinion being a BIG Miss Congeniality movie fan!) bought us the most glorious ice cream brownie sundae.

By the end of the evening we had a brand new Mrs. America, and I had done what I came to do. Be a part of something I'd worked for for the last 4 years. I made friends, encouraged people, was encouraged myself, and made memories I will cherish. I will treasure my ladies at Mrs. America. I will think fondly of Tucson. I will remember it all.

And in the words of Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz... "There's no place like home."

Day 7

Prelims!

We spent the day working on prelim night production and competition. I was all excited about the day, and not because I was thinking of that night...sorry...I was thinking of my wonderful husband FINALLY getting there!!! I was on pins and needles all morning and when I got a text from Eric at lunch saying he had arrived, I don't think I've ever eaten so fast in my life! I got to have the biggest and best hug ever from him, and then back to practice. And that ended up running over...now I know why ladies come to rehearsal in curlers!!! I've never gotten put together so fast in my life, but there's always something to "put you to the test"! I think I did alright! ;)

We had opening number in our swimsuits, swim competition, evening gown competition, and then costume. And then I got to spend more time with my sweetheart...and EAT!!! Those chicken quesadillas were awesome that night!

FYI - our dance number was to the same song Napoleon Dynamite danced to for Pedro's talent portion of his run for presidency. The first 2 days of practice, I had the worst time keeping a straight face. Our dance was much better than his...but, bring on the moon boots...YES YES!!!

Costume...and I am sad that the bazillion blue crystals I sewed and glued do not show up in this picture! OK, not a bazillion, but you get it! Mine represented the Great Lakes Naval Station as a thank you to our men and women in uniform, Illinois for being home to the largest training center of the US Navy, and for my grandpas and father-in-law who were/are all military.

Sorry, no gown (you'll see it later), but if you've seen state, then you've seen it...I was the lady in red, and a very special 'thank you' to all my sweet ladies for the compliments! Right back at ya, babes!!! Seriously, I have not seen so many gorgeous ladies in gorgeous gowns(DC, yes, I am still your "Jessica". )!

Day 6

Interviews! Sunday was the day for interviews and then some free time in the afternoon before a fabulous Jazz Fest and then...YEP! More practice! ;) We also had our contestant gift exchange that night. Nothing like Christmas in September!!!

I enjoyed my time with the judges, and was glad for the opportunity to get to experience that. And I know I have said it before, but I will say again that I was glad not to be one of them. They had a seriously hard job to do!

I also got to spend some quality time with Erika's family...I think I may have to adopt them. They were loving, kind, funny, and terrific to be around. They made my time away from home and family easier to manage (I missed them SO much!) by embracing me as one of their own. Erika has 2 brothers, Eric and Dirk, and her mother joked that all she had to do when they were younger was yell "IRK!" and all three came running...LOVE THAT! ;)

Day 5

And what time is it...?!?!?! Saturday was the official swimsuit shot taken at the crack of dawn...literally. Apparently, to get a good shot at the pool before the sun comes up over the mountains, we needed to be out there ready to go at 6:15am...I DO NOT look pretty at 6:15am, let alone the almost 2 hours beforehand my roommate and I had to get up to attempt said "pretty". You'll have to look at her blog for our pool shot...she is a better woman than me getting that for us. I was too scared! ;)

After the morning swim shot (which by the way, I was a touch bitter about, not only because it was so early, but because it also took off my self-tanner I'd worked so hard on building up! Yep! I had what looked like major sock lines on my calves I had to hurry and cover up before practice!!! And, might I add, with some much needed assistance by my roommate...yeah, that stays with us!... "What happens in Tucson, stays in Tucson"...and because THAT is TOO FUNNY, I am no longer bitter looking back!). That and I had another "moment" thinking of when Julie had been there, and during the swimsuit shot for her was when it hit her that she was at Mrs. America. Awwww...

After that, we headed off again to practice and then had another formal dinner to look forward to that evening for the gift presentation for Loew's Resort Hotel Manager.

I was bad about getting pictures that night, so I will have to search some out, however, I will post what may be the worst kept room on the face of the earth. I think I corrupted my very neat, angel of a roommate as we seriously had next to no carpet space by the end of it all.

Day 4

We started the day with taking photos in golf attire out at the resort's course. If I golfed, I would certainly go here!!! It was fun to get to hang out with the ladies before practice began again...and I would have enjoyed it more I think had it not been for the heat starting early, and the fact that I got a sunburn. Lips, shoulders and legs were a good solid pink post pictures. It hurt to eat that night...I don't tan. I am so naturally white, I reflect light more than anything else. Spray tan and bronzer are my buddies. And I am sure the color of my body versus the color of my face is a bit of a give away in a lot of these photos. But I digress, as the scenery and time together still far outweighs any woes.

That afternoon we got to meet the great Florence Henderson...I think I had a "moment" as childhood memories flooded in seeing her. She is such a tiny lady! Very cute, and very nice, she was a big highlight of our time together. And her personality was good for a laugh finals night! (She cursed pantyhose backstage, and I about fell over in stitches laughing at that. And her understanding of us all and what we were going through, and saying"let's get these ladies out of their shoes and some food!!!" made my day. Real as real gets, that one is!)

We also got to meet Mrs. Marmel, and got to see Maureen for the first time. She is a dancer to the core, and I could easily watch her for hours.

Day 3

Practice, practice, practice...and shopping...you will practice for shopping, right, ladies? :) We were taken to La Encantada shopping mall for a red carpet champagne event at the St. John Store, and then were given some more time to look around and pick up anything we might like to have before returning for more practice for the production numbers. I think a lot of us enjoyed some quality time at the MAC store! :)

Then back to practice (did I mention practice?), and finishing up the day with dinner in the President's Suite and the giving of our first dignitary gifts. I think a few of us were concerned about having to go outside in the dark to get there with some of the critters we'd already encountered, but needless to say, it all went without a hitch, and the dinner and visiting was very nice. And can I say that I kept seeing more and more dresses that were so beautiful?!? All the ladies have some serious style!

Day 2

Oh...."the wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round"...please someone make it stop for all the motion sick beauty queens, please!!!

We had practice time in the morning and then spent the afternoon working for Habitat for Humanity, planting trees and bushes for a new location of homes. I have to brag on Mrs. Alaska because we got 2 trees planted ourselves, then tackled a third with Mrs. Utah and Mrs. Arizona who happened upon the biggest tree and the smallest place to plant. Gotta give 'em props for having big aspirations! Erika set to creating a new, larger hole to plant and made a perfect place for everyone to get it together. There's a reason why she has some awesome arm/shoulder muscles!

That evening we went to a terrific Mexican Restaurant for dinner...Ole'!

Official Day 1

Day 1 was orientation and then orientation dinner...easy enough! :) My poor roommate arrived terribly sick, so I think we were both glad for the extra day to sleep in and leisurely check in and get ready. I took in a day in the gym and enjoyed the view of the mountains I remember Julie Rinehart telling me about 4 years ago. Being there was so surreal, but every time I would see something she had told me about and reminisced during her time in Tucson, I would think of her and smile, knowing that there had been a time when I'd wanted to be at Mrs. America myself and thinking it would never, ever happen. After some gym time, I cleaned up, checked in, then got ready for a beautiful dinner in a gorgeous ballroom, with even more gorgeous women. And I remember looking at dessert thinking to myself, "WHAT?!?! I have swimsuit competition!!!" Looking back, I should have enjoyed that little treat a bit more because I lost some serious weight by the time prelims came around.

Mrs. America, Here We Come!

I will do my best to update the blog as quickly as possible. I returned home Wednesday, and I am still in a blur...fog...daze...all of the above. I promise to work hard to catch up.

I will open with saying that this was an incredible experience, made incredible by 50 women that each could have easily taken home the crown themselves. I would not have wanted to be a judge this year; as I got to know a different lady, I would think "She would definitely be a great Mrs. America!" Guess that's why they each won their state! I am impressed, awed, honored and grateful to have been counted among the Class of 2009.

Day 1

I left for Tucson the day before orientation to get unpacked and acclimated before everything began, as I was warned there's not much "down time"...SO true!

It was an easy flight and being greeted by folks from Tucson right in the airport "We're so glad you're here! We love when Mrs. America comes to Tucson!" was so cool. Michael, my driver, was incredibly nice, and to see a sign with my name on it made me feel very important. He filled me in on all I was seeing on the way to the hotel, and wished me luck. The staff was ready to help me unload and get settled, making sure I had everything I needed...talk about getting the royal treatment!

My roommie arrived soon after, and she was by far one of the best things about my experience. Sweet, kind, unselfish, and caring from the very beginning, I knew that God was thinking of me when He gave her to me as my bunk mate for Mrs. America. Definitely a saving grace!

We went to dinner to meet up with more ladies before the first day, and I was so impressed...and a little unnerved...seeing all these tall, beautiful people. I was glad for that time though, because their familiar pretty faces were great to see again the next day, and I was glad to find that pretty was not just skin deep.

I had a great weekend at Six Flags getting to be a part of the FAME talent search Sunday. I was originally asked to judge, then asked to appear as a special guest and hand out the "Big Award" at the end instead. Thankful that changed, because these talented acts were unbelievable! I would never have just picked one winner!

I also got to meet and hang out with the new group V-Factory...I think I am now officially into boy bands...they were incredibly talented and I am sure there will be huge things to come for them! It was funny, because one of the guys, Wesley, was actually gunning for me to try to work it out to have them be the talent entertainment for Mrs. America...sorry dude, but I don't have that kind of clout...I wish though, because they would be amazing! So Mrs. America Family, if you're listening, watching, what have you, V-Factory would love to be part of the Mrs. America Production, and I think audiences would love it! ;)

(Note: I have a soft spot for Jared, who chivalrously wanted to give up part of his wardrobe to keep me warm back stage, but they had to get onstage quicker than they thought, so I had to give his jacket back. Still, that couple minutes to defrost was a gift all it's own...his mom brought him up well! :) )

I mentioned how service is so huge with the Rotarians, and love their theme of "Service Above Self"

They have what's called a Four Way Test that I thought I'd share, because I think there is a great deal of merit to it.

First...Is it Truth?
