Alyce Hamm Gift




Part of the Mrs. Illinois Prize Package is going to Alyce Designs to pick out your very own gown. Walking in today seeing the walls of photos of queens that have walked that very warehouse, then stepping in to see rows upon rows of gowns was really something. The little girl inside of me giggled profusely...sparkles, sparkles and more sparkles.


I met Sherry, the nicest receptionist up front (she made sure I had something to drink and was cared for right away), then escorted by Phoebe who's been assisting and working with Alyce Designs for just about a year now (so very cute!) to meet Rene Hamm (also very nice to me), then on to meet Nathalie who was so very generous with her time. She brought an empty rack to fill with gowns (insert crazy girl squealing!), and then helped try things on. She was such a sweetheart.

Miss Lake County Fair Pageant







The Lake County Fair is now underway, and I had the opportunity to meet with the outgoing queens and see the new being ushered in. It is a very nice pageant, well produced, and you see how they appreciate each individual lady competing. The rose ceremony they do at the end, presenting each lady with a single rose, serenade and hug, was very touching. All ladies who compete in pageantry should be made to feel special, crown or not.



I also happened to meet a lovely person by the name of Beverly Turkowski who just happened to choose a seat next to me. As we got to talking, I remembered seeing her in SuperModels Unlimited Magazine as Ms. American United States! She's been in pageants for quite a while and as it turns out we know a lot of the same people. I was so thankful to have spent that time with her and have that evening to share together. She is a lovely lady inside and out.



God was also kind to place two young ladies next to me that were very kind with their compliments. They were so cute asking all kinds of questions about the pageant and all. They said they felt really special getting to sit next to me (gosh, I hope I didn't stink, it was really, really muggy out!!!), but it was me who felt special for they way they acted toward me. One actually hugged me goodbye and had tears, saying she wanted to be like me when she grows up. I'm touched and flattered that any young lady would say that (Heaven knows there's a part of me praying that my little girl will look up to me in some ways), but I hope and pray she grows up to be whom she is meant to be and that she takes pride in that. I hope she sees that she is beautifully made with lots to offer, and I hope she never loses sight of that. I pray I never fail others in helping them see that, and pray even more that I never lose sight of that myself.

Thursday I flew to New York to have photos taken for Mrs. America and my first ones as Mrs. Illinois. This is pretty huge for me in a lot of ways because I've never been to New York before in my life, and to get to work with Fadil Berisha, the official photographer of the Miss USA and Miss Universe Organization, is something I NEVER thought of doing, let alone it actually happening!




I was incredibly grateful to have my friend Rena from Florida be there as well. She was a huge help and support, and she made it all the more fun! I met up with her first after my flight in and we did a bit of shopping and lunch at Bergdorf's. I picked up a pair of shoes on sale for $1495.00...and set them RIGHT BACK DOWN AGAIN!!!! That was something! I knew I wasn't in Kansas...er, Gurnee...anymore! GRACIOUS!




We then headed off to Fadil's and were met at the door by him and escorted to hair and makeup. Walking in there and seeing photos of Miss USA and the girl's from this past year in their 40's glam garb was surreal. Getting to know them all more, I found out that my hairstylist had worked for Ford Models, and at one time had worked on Jackie Chan's hair!!! It also happened to work out that my shoot ran alongside an assistant of Donald Trump's, so I got to meet her and Roston Ogata, who is the guy in charge of running Miss Teen USA, Miss USA and Miss Universe around in NY. He was so nice and a blast to talk to! I also met Miss Albania and Miss Kosovo who were in NY getting their shots done for the Miss Universe Pageant in August. Such sweet girls!
Now, I share this with great pride and even greater humility (believe it or not)...Miss Albania actually asked me which country I was representing, saying she was glad I was there so she could make more friends before going to Miss Universe...Oh, HONEY, can I take you home and keep you?!?! My head and heart could have burst from her saying that to me! That was one brief moment of elation I won't soon forget. Honestly, I will probably hang onto that conversation for as long as I can for the moments when I don't feel so pretty (those H&M people are pretty darn AWESOME, aren't they?!?! HAHAHA!). Seriously, all you ladies out there...take the compliments, encouragement, and any other support you ever get and tuck them away in your heart. Don't dwell on them so you puff up, but retain them so that when things happen to cause self doubt, fear, disappointment, or dissatisfaction, you can pull out those gems of kindness and remind yourself that you are uniquely, beautifully you. You are worth it!




After the shoot, we headed to China Grill for dinner. Fadil said "You're beautiful, you did a good job, now go get a drink to celebrate!" So we tried a "Pink Halo" which was also a first for me. Cheers!



So thanks go to Fadil Berisha, Colin, Yoku, Roston, and the rest for treating me like I was really something special for the evening. That is a night I will never, ever forget. To Rena for taking me around NY, for taking photos, helping with wardrobe set out, selection and changes, and for making sure the crown sat just right on my head! ;) To Rena and Steve for an excellent dinner and time together, miss you both so much already! And an extra special thank you to my husband for making it possible for me to go to NY, for taking care of Elena and Diva, and for being the most loving, supportive person. Thank you for telling me I'm beautiful , for making me feel beautiful, and for being beautifully mine. I love you.

Bri' Zan Trip




Wednesday was spent at Bri'Zan Couture in Naperville to use a generous gift certificate given by Sue, the store owner. I was so pleased to not only get to see her again, but also meet her beautiful family. Her mother Mary greeted me immediately, and I spent some quality time with her sister Reem, and her brand new baby girl, Giana...I'll have to get a picture of her next time - she was sleeping when we left! I swear there are little cherub wings hiding under her clothes. :) I also got to meet Sue's lovely daughter, Briana, who has a smile as bright as the sun and a darling, sweet spirit about her. Humble and quiet, she was such a bright spot in that day.


My thanks to Sue for the generosity of her time, talent and selection. Sue is one of those people that makes you feel like you are the most important person in the world to her, and that your happiness and satisfaction is her ultimate goal. My thanks to her family for making me feel so special. Fun Facts: The store is really something to see, and it's style and set up was a dream of Sue's, and she actually found a space that reflected the dream perfectly! And the name is inspired by her daughter, Briana.

From Race Track to Relay Track











After a day at Arlington, the afternoon and evening was spent with Relay for Life /American Cancer Society...off with the heels, on with the t-shirts!


I had the opportunity to work with Alesa and Sue at the Web Cam Shots Tent, where we set up computers for our participants to take a picture and write to congress about why ACS and Relay for Life is Vital, and how we need to do everything we can to aid in early detection and covering financial needs of sufferers and survivors. Many go bankrupt in an effort to live...literally! We not only went past our number goal for that, but the Gurnee/Wadsworth Relay for Life has officially raised One Million Dollars to aid in the efforts of ACS since beginning in the area!



I also got to meet up with my ladies I'll be working with specifically for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer effort. How great to add the Lake County Affiliate along with the Chicagoland Affiliate work!

Special Thanks to Kari for working on the event and allowing me the opportunity to serve, to Alesa and Sue for not only being invested in a great cause, but being invested in the people you work with. To Carol and Sarah, I look forward to what we have planned next with "Making Strides!" You are all beautiful inside and out and such blessings! You are making a difference and leading by example!

Arlington Park, Benefitting Susan G Komen
















This Saturday, I was invited to attend the Fashion Fresh Showcase at Arlington Park benefitting Susan G Komen. This was a terrific event to be a part of, seeing 10 breast cancer survivors modeling fashion wear, First Lady of Fashion Contest, vendors of beautiful hats and dresses, Mario Tricoci, and of course bringing awareness and raising money for the Susan G Komen for the Cure Organization. Good fun for a good cause! I joked with a couple of the ladies that this was the first SGK event I've been a part of NOT wearing t-shirts, jeans and no makeup!


Meeting Kathi (my new go-to gal for this organization) in person was so nice after so many emails. She is something else! She made us - and I'll get to the "us" part in a minute - feel so special, so welcome giving us box seat tickets to enjoy the races going on, complimentary tickets to the event itself, and making sure we were taken care of. What an example she (and her family , as they were all there!) is working as hard as they were at this event and going above and beyond to see to it that it was both a great event and a great experience. I am thrilled to continue working with her. Side note: I was also able to meet some other folks I'll be working with throughout the year as well, and we have some exciting things to look forward to! Can't wait to share those!



Now to the "us" part! Kaili Harding, Mrs. Illinois America 2005 was kind enough to be my travel companion for the day, and we had a blast! She and I were decked out in our homemade - yes, you got it! Our crafty little selves made hats to match our dresses - hats and fun attire, and really enjoyed a benefit that is close to my heart, and CLOTHES to my heart, as getting to get dolled up like this was a dream! We were even given vouchers to place a bet as another welcome gift from our "paparazzi", Bob. He followed us around all day, taking shots of "Mrs. Illinois at Arlington Park" all over...literally! He wanted the park to have plenty of photos in plenty of different areas. That made us feel pretty special, too. Thank you. Bob, for the kind gift, and help with photos!



Back to the bets...neither Kaili nor I had been there before, nor ever placed bets so we did the logical thing and picked a horse by the name we liked. I'm sure you can imagine the tellers finding HUGE humor in this! The first we picked together and came in 2nd place winning some money! YEA! We tried again because it was SO much fun going to watch the race you bet on. Kaili fared better than me, placing 2nd again, while mine was dead last. Guess that will teach me that gambling is not really my thing, which I kind of already knew! ;) We then met a kind gentleman who saw our good luck and asked how we were betting. When we told him he said, "Oh, NO! That's not how you play to win!" Gave us a quick Gambling Lesson 101 on how to pick your horse, then offered to give us the next bet as a gift, and we could pick again. Well, my luck was obviously not the one to go with, so I left it in Kaili's able hands, and sure enough, she picked the winner!


So some thanks are in order: To Kathi for your kindness and generosity to us, and for your many efforts in raising awareness and funds for Susan G Komen. I can't wait to work together on our next event! To Arlington Park, thank you for hosting the event and making it a great one! To Bob, the photographer, thank you for all your hard work that day! And to Kaili, for taking time out for me, for making me feel like a queen, and for being both a terrific friend, and a great example of what a queen should be.

Traveling the State to Danville, IL


























Yesterday was the beginning of the Vermilion County Fair and the 50th Anniversary of the Miss Vermilion County Fair Pageant. It was terrific going back to support the organization, but even more so because I got to be there with Mrs. Iowa, Loni McNertney, whom I grew up with in Danville. We would cheer each other on during pageant time - she competed in the Fair Circuit, and I competed in MAO. I remember the most GORGEOUS gown Loni used to wear...still not many compare to it...good memories!



The two of us drove miles to get there, got to reacquaint ourselves with some friendly faces and meet some new ones...and then the storms hit...LITERALLY! Clouds rolled in like gang-busters and soon torrential downpours...not conducive to a great outdoor pageant, that's for sure! It was fun though, getting to hang out with the girls in the tent they had hoping for the rain to pass.


Sadly, it was not to be, and we had to make a run for it to our cars to get to the new location. Now Loni, being the seasoned park vet and having experienced this happening herself during her competition days, slides her shoes off like a pro and says, "Get ready to run! Take your shoes off, girl! I don't want you to break an ankle!" (and that's love, ladies, because there was a huge opportunity for sabotage!!! ;) HAHAHA...You'll find that Loni is probably one of the last people on earth to ever do something like that. She's the type who sits down and does the competition's hair and makeup so EVERYONE looks good.)
There's something pretty spectacular (and kinda comical) seeing a bunch of pageant queens running through park mud in crowns and sashes barefoot, kicking up said mud, and grass, and rocks...and eeewwwww... as they go! Had we not feared ruining our cameras and freezing, it would have been a GREAT photo op! We also had a very kind gentleman who's been with the Pageant for years, happen to meet us at the entrance in a golf cart, and offered to take us to our car. Talk about serious timing!!! God Bless that man!!!


The pageant continued indoors - much later - but without a hitch and it was a great show. Getting to address the crowd as hometown girls as well as share our beginnings in pageantry together, where we are now, and about the Mrs. America System was a pretty cool highlight of the evening. Despite everyone looking like drowned rats, we all had a really good time. More good memories made!


My thanks to Loni for meeting up and driving us to the different locations. You, my dear, are stunning as ever, a class act, and I can't wait to hang out at nationals together! Thank you to Marilyn and Linda, directors of the Miss Vermilion County Fair Pageant for making us feel so welcome and special, and pulling it all together to make a great pageant for these very hard-working girls. A very special thank you to Dee Lane for opening her home to me (former Mrs. Illinois America who lives not too far from Danville) so that I would not have to drive home at midnight. That's sisterhood! Thank you for being so concerned about my safety, thank you for my BEAUTIFUL bedroom to sleep in, and thank you for awesome coffee in the morning to get me going before my long trip home.

Imperfect Beauties


A friend of mine is leading a women's bible study focusing on body image: what God says, what Satan wants us to believe, and what we as women put ourselves through (not just on a daily basis, but sometimes moment by moment!). As her friend and as Mrs. Illinois, she asked me to contribute by sending a photo of the pageant and my feelings (I'll share what I wrote in another post) on this.

Low and behold,I signed in on my computer today to check email, and there spread across the information and news page, was a huge article about imperfect beauties! Even Hollywood starlets we admire, coveting their looks and glamorous lifestyle, have their own issues with their flaws.

Really?!?! You mean they're human after all?!?!

So I wanted to share this with everyone...I hope it's an encouragement to you!

Imperfect Beauties

Beauties like Megan Fox can still be insecure about their looks. It seems that no matter how beautiful a woman is, people have to find a flaw. Right now the Internet is buzzing about Megan Fox's thumbs. Really? The girl could not be more drop-dead gorgeous, and people are taking time out of their busy lives to analyze the size and shape of her thumbs? It's no wonder that women, and female celebrities in particular, obsess about certain body parts or facial features. If we don't do it, it's almost guaranteed that someone else will. Megan Fox doesn't seem all that concerned about her thumbs from what we can tell, but she did say in a recent interview that she is extremely insecure about her looks. She even joked (we hope!) about thinking she's an Alan Alda lookalike. And while we think Alan is adorable, Megan clearly wins out in the attractiveness department. We also contend that some people's "flaws" are actually what makes them alluring, like Julia Roberts' wide, contagious smile. So we present a list of gorgeous celebrities who have criticized themselves or have been critiqued by others for being less-than-perfect.

We think Kim Kardashian gets a bit of a bad rap. Sure, she had that "for adults' eyes only" Internet tape a few years back, and her reality TV show is a bit too voyeuristic for our tastes, but she's actually a successful business woman, and we think it's unfair that her backside is the "butt" of all her jokes (bad pun intended). As girls who are less than endowed in that area, we think she should continue to stand tall and proud and display her rear without shame. The stunning beauty was publicly annoyed when Complex magazine airbrushed her cover shot to hide some cellulite. Kim fought back by posting the before and after shots on her own website. You go, girl.

Personally, we think Michelle Pfeiffer is more beautiful today at 51 than she was when she first hit the big screen in the '80s. In 1990 she became the cover girl for People magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People issue, and in the interview she said she thought she looked like a duck because of the way her nose tilts up and her mouth curls. Sorry, Michelle, we don't see anything in any way resembling any kind of bird. Thankfully, in more recent interviews, she's finally shed her duck-phobia and laughed at her own off-base critique.


Christina Applegate has said that her short legs and long torso drive her crazy and that she wishes she was built more like long-stemmed beauty Cameron Diaz. She says if she searches hard enough, she can find the right jeans to fool the eye. Well, we think Christina has found the magic fashion formula because we never would have thought in a million years that this beauty had leg issues.


Drew Barrymore claims her #1 beauty problem is acne. We claim she's crazy. But when Drew is asked what her most important beauty item is, she says without hesitation: "zit cream." It must be really good, because we think her skin is flawless. Besides, Drew says she doesn't let any blemish stop her. She thinks happiness makes us pretty, and if someone is content inside, they reflect it outside. We'd like to second that emotion.


Audrey Hepburn: Classic beauty, fashion icon, stunningly perfect. Right? Apparently, even this drop-dead gorgeous actress was self-conscious about her appearance, in particular her size 10 feet. Funny, we watched her all these years and never even noticed her feet. Except, of course, for those classic flats that she brought into vogue with her pegged pedal pushers. Or maybe her big feet were just overshadowed by her enormous talent.

Unlike Audrey Hepburn, Kate Hudson likes her feet. In fact, she once told People magazine that they are the only part of her body that she's never been self-conscious about. She also said that after she's through with having babies, she might think about a boob job ... but then went on to say probably not. She says she likes being herself. We couldn't agree more, Kate, as we look at you in those stunning belly button-baring red carpet dresses. Remember, the grass is always greener.

If you look at pictures of Shannen Doherty, there's no denying the critique of her face that runs rampant on the Internet: she is ever so slightly crooked. Studied carefully, there is little symmetry to her face. And though there's no record of her responding to the criticisms, she does pose most often with her head tilted just a little to one side (perhaps to even the scale?). Still we defend the actress' attractiveness. Until it was pointed out to us, we thought of her as just another pretty starlet and contend that isn't it these imperfections that give us character? We should all be so lucky as to have Shannen's "flaws."


OK, Madonna has a gap between her front teeth. There we said it. We also say, so what? With arms like that, is anyone looking at her teeth? And although the space has seemed to shrink in recent years, we commend her for keeping her signature "flaw" even while trying to perfect everything else about her body. We think it just adds to her charm.


A few years back, when Hugh Grant was on Oprah he joked about his past co-star Julia Roberts' big mouth, saying that when he kissed her there was a slight echo. Of course, he was teasing, but as any picture will show you, her mouth is disproportionately bigger than her other facial features. But is there anyone alive who hasn't been infected by Julia's wide smile and hearty laugh? Her mouth and everything that goes with it is what makes her Julia. And as for Hugh, she forgave him for his cruelty and hopes to act with him again.


Believe it or not, even the stunning Eva Mendes has a few body hang-ups. As a kid, she used to get teased about her mole ("Hey, Eva, there's some chocolate on your face!") and considered having it removed. She's said that she thinks her hands look like they belong on a little boy. And she also has compared her overbite to a bottle opener and revealed that her family used to call her "Bugs." Still, Eva, who nowadays is known as one of Hollywood's greatest beauties, says she's come to terms with her "flaws."
